New publication ‘MicroRNA based Prediction of Posthepatectomy Liver Failure and Mortality Outperforms Established Markers of Preoperative Risk Assessment’

In June, an article was published in the Annals of Surgical Oncology with the participation of employees of dwh GmbH and TU Wien. The journal is the official journal of the Society of Surgical Oncology (ASO) and is the leading specialist journal for surgical oncology. It focuses on clinical and translational research to advance surgical cancer treatment.

The published study investigated the predictability of posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF), still the most significant factor determining outcome after liver resection and responsible for nearly half of postoperative mortality. We evaluated whether a newly developed, commercially available test to measure circulating microRNAs (miRs) can predict PHLF and compared it with other established liver function tests. The modelling team from dwh GmbH and TU Vienna developed a health economic analysis that examined the cost-effectiveness of hepatomiR ® in terms of life years gained due to improved risk stratification of patients.
